Local resident makes and donates memory mats for Memory Care Residents...
St. Camillus Life Plan Community resident creates meaningful donation for St. Camillus memory care residents.
Independent Living Resident, Gen Gawkoski, was recently researching craft ideas on the internet when she came across examples of “Alzheimer’s Activity Mats.” The pictures showed a placemat sized mat filled with sewn on articles such as zippers, beads, yarns, and other objects that could be opened and closed, textures to be felt like velvet and fur and beads on a string that could be moved back and forth.
Gen continued to read the resident benefits when using the activity mats which include lessened restlessness and wandering. Gen though tshe could make some of these mats and donate them to a local memory care community. Her next thought was “Why should I send it away when we have a memory care residence right in my own backyard?”
Gen later worked with Michele Grall, St. Camillus Foundation Assistant, and her friend from the Community Quilters. Her friend approached the group and as a result, their members made and donated numerous activity mats which are currently in use at St. Camillus’ North Residence Memory Care.
“The mats have been given to residents who like to keep busy with their hands and may not be able to engage in projects. Sensory stimulation is so important in helping all residents thrive no matter what their level of functioning. We use the mats when we see a need to stimulate the mind or bring a feeling of calmness and peace to a resident. We love them.” - Bridget McNair, St. Camillus Research and Life Enrichment Director
