San Camillo resident turns love of baking into an opportunity to share...
St. Camillus Life Plan Community resident spreads cheer and keeps bellies full with special cookie deliveries.
“Hello cookie man” said a St. Camillus housekeeper while passing by and joking with Independent Living resident Mark Cieslik in the hallway. Mark has lived at St. Camillus Independent Living for 2 years and spreads joy to others with his smile and generosity.
Mark bakes often and currently keeps a good supply of cookies on hand while in social isolation. He likes to share his cookies regularly with St. Camillus staff and drops a package at the front desk for staff to share. When asked what his favorite recipe is, he replied: “There is no favorite because I just make the cookies I like!” Mark typically rotates between 4 recipes: chocolate cherry nugget, peanut butter, chocolate chip or oatmeal. Aside from baking, Mark enjoys watching war documentaries, westerns and comedies on TV and reading war time books.
Mark worked in Law Enforcement in multiple roles for 39 years until he retired in 1990 as a Sergeant. While working as a cop, his team would visit many restaurants downtown and receive complimentary meals. Mark would ask to learn the recipes and then calculate the proper quantities to produce servings to feed his family at home. His late wife, Marian, typically worked until 4pm and Mark started work shortly after. Mark would cook meals for his family and have them ready to reheat when his wife returned from work. His love for cooking and baking increased while hunting, fishing and camping with friends. Mark’s role was always the cook of the group and was even known as “the breakfast guy.” Mark recently bought a new mixer and will continue to keep busy baking his specialty cookies and asking if those are“copcakes” as staff pass by with treats for their hallway birthday celebrations.
