Creating Art to Fuel the Hungry by Lindsey Bartelt
St. Camillus Independent Living residents gathered at San Camillo on February 14th to paint bowls in preparation for the 6th annual Joseph Bowls Supper on Thursday, March 8, 2018 hosted by the School Sisters of St. Francis. All the proceeds from the event will go to two projects that feed the hungry: the School Sisters of St. Francis Casa Alexia mission on the border and Unison Milwaukee.
The 6th annual Joseph Bowls Supper hosted at the Sisters’ of St. Joseph Center, located at 1501 S Layton Blvd, Milwaukee, allows attendees to indulge in a delicious, all-you-can eat dinner of soup, bread, dessert and beverage as well as receive a homemade bowl made by the Sisters, community partners, and St. Camillus residents, all while supporting a great cause.
Unison Milwaukee helps central-city residents manage their own basic needs for food, healthcare, stable housing, and financial security. Unison offers multiple tools to achieve these goals such as educational classes, community gardens, cooking and nutrition classes, and individualized counseling sessions on empowerment. Casa Alexia is a mission of the Sisters that assists families living in impoverished neighborhoods in El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. The Sisters’ deliver a monthly supply of rice, beans, peanut butter, sugar, powdered milk, cooking oil, noodles and vegetables to more than 100 local families. Unfortunately, many of these families rely on the food rations to survive due to the severe level of poverty. The main goal of the two initiatives is to not only help hungry families fulfill a basic need to function on a day to day basis, but to help build the skills and life lessons of self-survival and empowerment.
St. Camillus is proud to partner with the School Sisters of St. Francis and continues to be their provider of choice for many of their Home Care needs. St. Camillus strives to provide peace of mind to seniors on our campus and in the surrounding communities by offering a full continuum of home health services St. Camillus is sponsored by the Order of St. Camillus, a Roman Catholic Order of Priests and Brothers with a mission of serving the poor and the sick worldwide since 1586. St. Camillus has been proudly serving southeastern Wisconsin for over 90 years, and is excited about expanding their mission as they move forward with growing their community.
