VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - East Side Al by Lindsey Bartelt
Sometimes you have such a heart-warming experience in life that it inspires you to give back in ways you never would have imagined. This is the case for our July Volunteer Spotlight, Al Baron. Several years ago, Al’s mother was admitted into hospice care. While she was going through the end-of-life stages, Al and his brother chose to play the guitar and sing for her. Al stated that the music had such a positive impact on his mom, the staff, and his family that he knew he wanted to play for residents in hospice in the future.
Al Baron started volunteering at St. Camillus in 2017 and has been coming two times a month to play for our hospice clients. Luckily, some of the residents in Assisted Living and Memory Care also get to enjoy his performances!
When Al is not performing, one would describe him as a model citizen. He has dedicated his life to serving others and to social accountability. Al has worked in non-profits for most of his life, mainly helping individuals with disabilities who reside in low-income areas. For the past 20 years, he resided in Nashville, TN and worked for an HIV/Aids organization as well as Habitat for Humanity.
St. Camillus is fortunate to have “East Side Al” as a dedicated volunteer and talented musician.
